Polyphosphates as a source of enhanced P fluxes in marine sediments overlain by anoxic waters: Evidence from P NMR

چکیده
Sedimentary phosphorus sPd composition was investigated in Effingham Inlet, a fjord located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in Barkley Sound. Solid-state P nuclear magnetic resonance sNMRd spectroscopy was applied to demineralized sediment samples from sites overlain by oxic and anoxic bottom waters. The two sites were similar in terms of key diagenetic parameters, including the mass accumulation rate, integrated sulfate reduction rate, and bulk sediment organic carbon content. In contrast, P benthic fluxes were much higher at the anoxic site. P NMR results show that P esters and phosphonates are the major organic P species present at the surface and at depth in sediments at both sites. Polyphosphates were only found in the surface sediment of the site overlain by oxic waters. The varying stability of polyphosphates in microorganisms under different redox conditions may, in part, explain their distribution as well as differences in P flux between the two sites. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1946447g

Are Iron-Phosphate Minerals a Sink for Phosphorus in Anoxic Black Sea Sediments?
Phosphorus (P) is a key nutrient for marine organisms. The only long-term removal pathway for P in the marine realm is burial in sediments. Iron (Fe) bound P accounts for a significant proportion of this burial at the global scale. In sediments underlying anoxic bottom waters, burial of Fe-bound P is generally assumed to be negligible because of reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides ...

We examined loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for two loci on chromosome 17p (D17S5 and TP53), and erbB-2 gene amplification, in primary breast cancers from 67 Brazilian patients. We identified two distinct regions of LOH on chromosome 17p, one spanning TP53 and the other a more telomeric region (D17S5). Based on a short-term follow-up, Kaplan-Meier analyses of patients' disease-free survival showed...
متن کاملConstraining the rate of oceanic deoxygenation leading up to a Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-2: ~94 Ma)
The rates of marine deoxygenation leading to Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events are poorly recognized and constrained. If increases in primary productivity are the primary driver of these episodes, progressive oxygen loss from global waters should predate enhanced carbon burial in underlying sediments-the diagnostic Oceanic Anoxic Event relic. Thallium isotope analysis of organic-rich black shale...
متن کاملPreservation of particulate non-lithogenic uranium in marine sediments
Particulate non-lithogenic uranium (PNU), excess U above detrital background levels found in marine particulate matter, is formed in surface waters throughout the ocean. Previous studies have shown that PNU is regenerated completely prior to burial of particles in sediments within well-oxygenated open-ocean regions. However, the fate of PNU has never been examined in ocean margin regions or in ...
متن کاملPlatinum-group elements (PGE) and rhenium in marine sediments across the Cretaceous– Tertiary boundary: Constraints on Re-PGE transport in the marine environment
The nature of Re–platinum-group element (PGE; Pt, Pd, Ir, Os, Ru) transport in the marine environment was investigated by means of marine sediments at and across the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary (KTB) at two hemipelagic sites in Europe and two pelagic sites in the North and South Pacific. A traverse across the KTB in the South Pacific pelagic clay core found elevated levels of Re, Pt, Ir, Os, a...
